Can I Read That?

I was sitting on the subway on my way to work this morning, listening to my iPod and reading as usual. I like to balance my iPod, purse, book, mug-o-coffee, and sometimes other odds and ends all on my lap. It's a talent I'm perfecting. Anyway...a nice lady sat down next to me, balancing her backpack on her lap and started writing in her journal.

After a while I noticed that she had stopped writing and was reading my book along with me. I actually don't mind people reading "over my shoulder" so to speak. After about five pages and getting close to my stop to get off, I took off my earphones and let her see the cover. She was all smiles, wrote down the title in her journal, said, "Thank you, I'll have to read that book". That kind of made my day.

In case you're curious, the book was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and I had just started reading it this morning.

Question: Where do you get ideas of books you want to read?

  1. I get a lot of them from the "Entertainment Weekly", "Locus", and "The New Yorker" book reviews. And of course I have my favorite authors where I read pretty much whatever they put out. I also ordered Kristen Tsetsi's book after reading her blog for a while, but I haven't started it yet.

  2. That would have made my day too :)

I get ideas of books to read from far too many sources, which is why my tbr and wish lists are so ridiculously long :P From fellow bloggers, from recommendations by authors I like, by browsing the library and bookstore, through Amazon's suggestions, etc.

  3. Too funny! I find myself reading over people's shoulders sometimes when I'm curious to know what they are reading. How you are liking Curious Incident? That's one I'd like to re-read one day.

Lately most of my ideas for reading come from blogging! Plus the massive TBR I have in my house.

  4. One of my girlfriends asked me once, "How do you find the books you read and how do you know if it's going to be any good?"
I like to read excerpts on Amazon, B&N and Borders, read reviews on all those sites and visit book blogs to see what is good out there. There is sooooooo much information that it is almost impossible not to find something good to read anymore.
